Iatmul or Sawos Shield, Middle Sepik River, East Sepik Province, Papua New Guinea. Carved and engraved hardwood, fibre, boar tusk and natural pigments. Of considerable age and carved with a central face with a further face at the bottom of the shield and eyes at the top. Zig-zag pattern and ovular designs painted with white, red and black pigments. Patina consistent with age and use within the culture. Early/Mid-20th., century. Approx L169cm. PROVENANCE John Magers Collection, Sydney.
